Hi

It seems the R&F (Rodan Fields) product line is being asked about on a regular basis, if I go by my own received email messages, which are beyond those coming to the site.  Before I post just a small sample of products and their problems, keep in mind that when ingredients like sulfur are used to clear up acne pimples, it works great and very fast especially with the amount of sulfur in these products.  The problem is, facial breakouts are a result of a problem and clearing them up is great, but that does not solve the "Acne" cause.  Which is certainly good for Rodan Fields because you have to keep ordering the products for the next breakout.  With the system we use with our USANA/Sensé products we work on the "CAUSE".  Now would that not make a lot more sense?!!!!!

Below are a couple of sample R&F products and their ingredients.  Note the preserving system along with other ingredients.  Not what we might want to see in products.

Review of a Few Products:

Unblemish Acne Treatment Sulfur Wash

Unblemish Acne Treatment Sulfur Wash contains 3% sulfur as an active ingredient, and although sulfur is a topical disinfectant option for battling blemishes, it is drying and irritating to skin. In a cleanser, you're getting less irritation than with leave-on products, but you'd also need to completely avoid the eye area and mucous membranes, which isn't the most convenient way to wash your face and remove makeup.  Given sulfur's side effects, it is best used under a doctor's care and not in a rinse-off product or a cleanser where eye irritation is a daily risk.

Ingredients:

Active: Sulfur (3%),

Other: Water, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Distearyl Phthalic Acid Amide, Lauryl Glucoside, Glycerin, Diisopropyl Adipate, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Sodium Polyacrylate, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Ceteareth-20, Laminaria Saccharina Extract, Cetearyl Alcohol, Yeast Extract, Glycol Stearate, Peg-100 Stearate, Sucrose, Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexyl Stearate, Glyceryl Stearate, Ethylhexylglycerin (preservative-natural), Bisabolol, Trideceth-6, Cetyl Alcohol, Linoleic Acid, Butylene Glycol, Fragrance, Acacia Senegal Gum, Potassium Sorbate, Limonene, Linalool, Citronellol, Geraniol, Titanium Dioxide, Blue 1, Red 33

Reverse Deep Exfoliating Wash

This product contains polyethylene beads, which is an ingredient that has come under controversy in the recent past. In December of 2013, research published in the peer-reviewed journal, Marine Pollution Bulletin demonstrated that although polyurethane beads are non-toxic to humans, they are not filtered during sewage treatment and are accumulating in waterways. This means the beads have the potential to negatively affect marine wildlife who mistakenly consume them (Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2013).

Additional research published in December of 2013 demonstrated that polyurethane beads have the potential to absorb pollutants while in waterways. This research was conducted to establish the potential of absorption, however, and was not conducted using samples from actual waterways (Cell, 2013).

Ingredients

Water, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Ammonium Laureth Sulfate, Polyethylene, Diethylhexyl Sebacate, Cetearyl Alcohol, PEG-40 Stearate, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Ceteareth-20, Glyceryl Stearate, Lactic Acid, Peppermint Oil, Xanthan Gum, Propylene Glycol, Fragrance, Diazolidinyl Urea,(Formaldehyde Preserving)  Methylparaben, Propylparaben,(Chemical Preserving)Yellow 5, Yellow 6

Redefine Multi-Function Eye Cream

Ingredients:

Water, Dimethicone, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Butylene Glycol, Caprylic/Capric/Myristic/Stearic Triglyceride, Squalane, Glycerin, Mica, Polysilicone-11, Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil, Sucrose Tetretearate Triacetate, Propylene Glycol Stearate, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Palmitoyl Hexapeptide-14, Sodium Hyaluronate, Palmitoyl Oligopeptide, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7, Tetrapeptide-16, Tranexamic Acid, Cetyl Alcohol, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Silica, Soy Lecithin, Tromethamine, Ethoxydiglycol, Barium Sulfate, Honey Extract, Caprylyl Glycol, Potassium Sorbate, Steareth-20, Hexylene Glycol, Chrysin, N-Hydroxysuccinimide, Peat Extract, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Extract, Gold, Phenoxyethanol (Chemical Preserving), Sodium Benzoate

Comments:   This product is in a jar container.  Once the lid is removed the important antioxidant and vitamins it might contain for antiaging would be destroyed by light and air contact.  This includes several plant antioxidants typically seen in Lauder products (Lauder used to own Rodan + Fields). However, the jar packaging, is the issue with this product.

Final Comment:

Rodan + Fields' acne products are virtually identical to their ProActiv products, except that these cost more through Rodan Fields. Maybe they thought no one would notice?  Some of their products seem to still contain Formaldehyde and chemical preserving ingredients as seen above.

They do have two fantastic skin-lightening products with hydroquinone; a well-packaged retinol product; every sunscreen provides sufficient UVA protection; some fragrance-free options.  Although the jar packaging hinders effectiveness of several otherwise impressive products; sunscreens should contain more bells and whistles for the money; eyebrow-raising amount of products with irritating ingredients, which we try to avoid for our skin.

I hope this helps you understand this line a little better especially when we know the amazing technology of our products and lack of irritating ingredients we see in so many other lines.  Irritation is not always evident, but that does not mean it is not happening.

Have a Sensé-tional Day!

Bea
